Gemfields Group Ltd Shares Growth Driver

  • Gemfields acquired the Kagem mine in 2007. The main commodities that is mined at this mine are emerald and beryl. Kagem is the world’s largest emerald producer at the moment and is situated in the Zambian Copperbelt. This mining area consists of three open pit mine sites of Chama is the main producer, supplying roughly 25% of the world’s emeralds. A SAMREC-compliant resource and reserve statement, put together by SRK Consulting in April 2018 confirms that the mine has another 27 years in its lifespan and that there is potential to increase yields as mining methods are refined in the future. The 2.2mk open pit mine has been designed to increase fleet use in the mine, thereby
    increasing cost effective mining.

  • The Montepuez ruby deposit is located in the northeast of Mozambique and is said to be the most significant recently discovered ruby deposit on the planet. According to a report from SRK Consulting the mine still has another 38 years in which it can constantly produce high grade rubies at a profit. The mine at Montepuez is operating across a series of shallow open pits and continued exploration efforts will help the company to plan mining operations to increase the yield per output.

  • The company processes and refines mined material on site, which reduces the production cost of gemstones significantly. It means that the mined rocks doesn’t have to be transported very far before it can be processed.

  • Gemfields has auctions where they sell some of their gemstones, but they also have a luxury jewellery brand – Fabergé, where they sell their stock. Fabergé expanded to the United States of America in 2017, where its first five months of operation saw revenue of US$3.4 million. The
company also opened a boutique in the Dubai Mall in March this year, where they are selling only Fabergé merchandise.

Gemfields Group Ltd Group Investor Tip

  • With the gemstone market slowly moving away from mainstream diamonds, emeralds and rubies are in high demand. Clear, top colour rubies retail for between US$1000 and US$3000. With an expected mine life of another 38 years, the Montepuez ruby mine promises to add a lot of value to the Gemfields Group. Emeralds from Zambia are sought after in the jewellery markets of the world, which means that Gemfields sits on the proverbial pot of gold with their two mining operations in Africa.
