Howden Africa shares

Background of Howden

  • Howden Africa Holdings is a company specialising in the design, manufacture and marketing of air and gas handling solutions for sale to a variety of industries, including mining, agriculture, power, petrochemical, construction, water treatment, transportation and general industry. The business is a divisional unit of worldwide organisation Howden.

  • The company’s history stems back to 1854, when James Howden & Co was established as a consulting engineering firm in Scotland. Today, Howden is a worldwide organisation with more than 4 200 employees and companies in 20 countries. Howden Africa produces a diverse range of large scale engineered plant and products, to form a turnkey solution developed for a client’s specifications. The group is split into the Fans and Heat Exchangers division and the Environmental Control division.

  • The group’s product and services portfolio includes fans and heat exchangers, compressors, blowers, incinerators, ventilation systems, nuclear circulators and dust collection systems. Howden Africa shares are available to buy under the engineering sector of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), with a market cap of around R2 billion.

Howden Shares Growth Driver

  • Howden Africa’s 2015 annual report represents a challenging year for the group. The group recorded profits of R215 million for the year, compared to R269 million the year before. Performance and Howden share price suffered due to depressed mining markets and reduced appetite for major equipment manufacturing capital investment, as a result of the current weak economic climate. New build opportunities across all industries have been scarce, which has prompted management to focus on export sales and additional revenue streams through bolt-on opportunities. The company also completed a resizing and restructuring process in 2015

  • The Fans and Heat Exchangers division (which generates around 75% of revenue) was the most severely affected, with revenue down by 13.8% and operating profit decreasing by 32.7%. The Environmental Control division managed to increased its revenue by an impressive 25%, with operating profits up by 68%, due to improved sales volumes and efficient project execution.

  • Considering the tough trade conditions, Howden Africa has managed to largely absorb these impacts and maintain respectable data, with investors still keen to buy the shares. Aftermarket environmental control turnkey installations, along with export revenue, continue to remain a strategic focus.

Howden Investor Tip

  • As with most companies in the industrial sector, the live online JSE chart shows that Howden Africa share price has been impacted by the tough economic conditions, but the company has managed to remain profitable. Howden Africa share price has stabilised in recent months, and the company has a strong enough balance sheet to take advantage of recovering economies. In particular, stricter environmental legislation in Africa is expected to provide opportunities for the Environmental Control division. For an industrial company in the current climate, Howden Africa shares have been identified as a good buy.
