Imbalie Beauty shares

Background of Imbalie Beauty

  • Imbalie Beauty is mainly a franchisor which markets and distributes its own independent health and beauty brands through 150 of its own beauty salons, independent salons and selected pharmacies throughout South Africa. Imbalie Beauty shares have been available to buy on the AltX of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) since 2007.

  • Imbalie’s three main salon brands are Placecol Skin Care Clinic, Dream Nails Beauty and Perfect 10 Nail & Body Studio. The company also recently acquired Prana Products. The group is engaged in ongoing training of all beauticians, nail technicians and hair stylists to ensure that high service levels are maintained. In March 2016, the group launched the Imbalie Training Academy to offer training courses to students.

  • Imbalie Beauty has a JSE market cap of R75.5 million. Imbalie Beauty share price has suffered a significant drop over the past few years as the group restructured from a corporate salon profile to a franchisor.

Imbalie Beauty Shares Growth Driver

  • Imbalie Beauty has signalled an ambition to become South Africa’s biggest beauty salon group. Over the past five years, the biggest challenge has been trying to transform from a corporate salon structure to that of a franchisor. Revenue was therefore lost with actions such as the withdrawal from Edgars. The company has embarked on extensive restructuring, which included revamping salons, aggressive roll out of franchises, acquisitions and upgrading product ranges. This has impacted cash balances, and the group experienced a R2.4 million loss for the financial year ended February 2015. The group’s performance was also impacted by exposure to a large retailer which experienced difficult trading conditions.

  • The most significant milestone achieved during the year was the upgrade and relaunch of the Placecol skin care range, which is today considered one of the best skin care ranges available for sale in South Africa.

  • The company is positive about its prospects going forward, and has said that it will buy extensively into the rest of Africa in the future. Imbalie is currently in the process of finalising where it will be positioning its brands in a number of African countries. It has also proposed a takeover deal to buy fitness group Curves Africa.

Imbalie Beauty Investor Tip

  • The live online JSE stocks chart shows that Imbalie Beauty share price has dropped from a high of R27 in 2014 to R10 in August 2016. The group’s declining profit margins have been attributed to the restructuring activities, which are now complete and should position the group for better growth going forward.

  • Imbalie is now a vertically integrated business with its own branded products manufactured locally and distributed in its salons. This will alleviate the pressure on margins caused by a weakening rand. Despite these positive moves, it will probably still take a while for investors to buy Imbalie Beauty shares, which don’t have a particularly illustrious recent history.
