Peregrine shares

Background of Peregrine

  • Peregrine Holdings is a wealth and asset management group comprising a number of niche financial services businesses which are either significantly managed or owned. The group’s investment strategy focuses on operational financial services businesses in South Africa and abroad, with appropriate B-BBEE shareholdings. Operations are split into five business segments, namely Wealth Management, Asset Management, Proprietary Investments, Broking & Structuring, and Advisory.

  • Underlying businesses (including the Citadel Group, Stenham, Java Capital, Green Oak Capital, SA Alpha, Peregrine Securities and Sandown Capital) are supported through the buy in of the company via capital investments; most of which constitute investments into hedge funds, managed by Peregrine’s fund managers. The group has total assets of around R100 billion under management and/or administration. Peregrine’s portfolio is well diversified, with international subsidiaries and associates accounting for 41% of profit.

  • Peregrine shares are for sale on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) with a market cap of R6.5 billion. The group has enjoyed a strong share trade history on the JSE, significantly outperforming the market.

Peregrine Shares Growth Driver

  • Peregrine has achieved impressive performance since it was established on 1996, with Peregrine share price tracking a steady rise up the live online stocks chart. Despite challenging market conditions for financial services companies, Peregrine’s data indicates a rise in income from R1.7 billion in 2012 to R2.7 billion in 2016.

  • Peregrine’s diversity allowed the group to increase revenue and improve on the record headline earnings delivered in the previous year. Even against a backdrop of immense economic upheaval in South Africa, the group marginally increased profits from R851 million in 2015 to R854 million in 2016, with dividends per share increasing by 3% to 155 cents. Higher annuity contributions countered lower contributions from performance fees and proprietary profits.

  • Peregrine’s wealth, asset management and trading businesses are designed to handle the increased levels of volatility characterising emerging and capital markets. Client retention ratios, new client inflows and activity levels benefited from the difficult conditions in some respects, as clients sought sound financial management from the group’s businesses. Peregrine Securities profited from increased market volatility in equities and derivatives.

  • Volatility did negatively impact the Advisory segment, as corporate finance and capital raisings plans were put on hold until economic conditions stabilised.

  • Today, annuity earnings account for in excess of 60% of earnings, ensuring that overall profitability of the group is not entirely dependent on equity market strength.

  • This is part of a deliberate strategy built in the context of weaker global returns and performance fees.

Peregrine Group Investor Tip
